Do I need VoIP?

By: Stephen Milton

The category of software and hardware that allows the Internet to be used as a transmission medium for telephone calls is known as VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol. The use of POTS circuits as a transmission medium for voice data is no longer in vogue; instead VoIP is now used to send voice data in packets. Many people find VoIP to be very beneficial because net telephony attracts no surcharges beyond the amount users pay for internet access.

Another term for VoiP is "Voice over IP " as it is simply a way of using the internet for telephone conversations. The two big motivations of this are cost and convenience, conventional phone services are more expensive and are not as fast as VoIP.

The following is a summary of the benefits of VoIP:

Telephone conversations will be at affordable rates: I guess no one will refuse the opportunity of making phone calls at cheap rate slip by. Various operators normally provide different packages, so don't be surprised to see some charge a small fee for services others are charging nothing for.

You will receive added features at no cost: You can enjoy many features for free with VoIP services; whereas others provide them at a cost. Great features that are absolutely free with VoIP are Voicemail, Caller ID, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting, Call Transfer, etc. It is also possible to get features like email and web utilities, which are very great for business, at no cost.

You have the leverage to select your Area code: Things like area codes and phone numbers can also be chosen with VoIP. This is the meaning of the above statement; existing numbers can be maintained by transferring it to the new VoIP service, and if you don't like it, you may select a new one but based on the area code.
