Overview Of Pattern Baldness And Prostate Enlargement Treatment

By: Chady Hicksey

BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate enlargement) is a condition that, unfortunately, many elderly men are too familiar with. The abnormal proliferation of cells results in prostate enlargement and if left untreated it has numerous consequences and full or partial obstruction of the urethra is the most common one. Numerous theories try to explain the causes of BPH: some researchers believe that it is caused by the lower testosterone production in older males, which leaves them with proportionally higher levels of estrogen, while other researches blame the derived from testosterone substance called dihydrotestosterone. Even though the causes are still not firmly established, the signs and symptoms are well-known and a man affected by BPH usually experience night, frequent, irregular or weak urination as well as ejaculation problems, hesitancy, urgency and bladder pain.

The diagnosis is typically made after rectal examination, but often ultrasound and certain blood tests are also done in order to rule out any malignancy. When a patient has been diagnosed, the prescribed treatment depends on the stage of the condition. the two most used groups of medications are the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors and the alpha blockers. Finasteride is one of the most popular drugs, it belongs to the group of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors and is sold as Proscar. It can be found online as generic Proscar or generic Finasteride. This medication is sold in two different dosages, Finasteride 1mg and Finasteride 5mg. while the smaller dose is used for treating male pattern baldness (MPB), the strongest is what is given to patients with BPH.

How does it work?

A ferment called 5-alpha-reductase is responsible for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone and the main "goal" of Finasteride is to inhibit this ferment, which in turn causes the prostate reducing. The effect isn't immediate and in the normal course of events it takes quite a while before any positive changes are obvious at the screening tests, however, the drug is extremely effective and the one that can be used for successfully treating BPH.

And when it comes to male pattern baldness (MPB), the Finasteride works in exactly the same way - it inhibits the 5-alpha-reductase and thus reduces the androgenic activity, so the hair loss is stopped and in some instances even hair re-growth is observed. The Finasteride 1mg is sold under the name Propecia or generic Propecia and is used as a fundamental hair loss treatment or is given to patients who have undergone hair transplant. Finasteride 1mg is one of the drugs that have been recognized as being very effective. It was approved by the FDA back in 1997. tests and studies involving great number of balding men had proved that most of them do not experience any further hair loss when given Finasteride 1mg and some even witness hair re-growth.

The generic Finasteride is often sold online and has certain advantages over the brand-name drug. it can be easily purchased and delivered by mail, does not require doctor's prescription and is much cheaper. Still, Finasteride should be taken under proper supervision by a qualified medical professional. as with almost all medications side effects are possible, but they are not serious and disappear once the treatment is finished.
